In the case of type I interferon knockout mice and their wild-type controls, all mice were challenged with secondary bacterial pneumonia, and the only variable was ±HAL exposure. (B) Timeline of events in the experimental model. Influenza inoculation (or mock infection) occurred on day 0 PVI. Mice in the HAL groups were exposed for 2 h on both days 0 and 4 PVI. EF3030 infection occurred on day 6 PVI. Mice were killed on day 6 PVI, 3 h post-EF3030, or day 7 PVI, 24 h post-EF3030.
