Computerized Provider Order Entry alerts. (A) When an erythrocyte (RBC) order is placed, an interruptive best practice advisory (BPA) is triggered if the preceding hemoglobin (Hb) value is greater than or equal to 7 g/dL or has not been measured in the previous 24 h. If the preceding Hb is less than 7 g/dL, then no BPA is triggered and the order is placed unimpeded. After acknowledging the BPA, the provider can either cancel the order or proceed by choosing a reason (B) to override the BPA and transfuse RBCs. These reasons are taken from the health system’s transfusion guideline policy.
