Table 1. Percent Trypan Blue Positive Myocytes at Increasing Concentrations of Modulators after Exposure to 120 min of Ischemia

Groups are (1) modulators inhibiting sevoflurane-mediated cell protection; (2) modulators without effect; (3) modulators inducing cell protection in the absence of sevoflurane; (4) ischemia and sevoflurane alone. Experiments with sevoflurane were performed at 2 minimum alveolar concentration. Data are mean ± SD with n = 8 in all cases.

* The lowest concentrations shown did not yet reach the maximum effect (P < 0.01).

† Not significantly different from preceding lower concentrations (P ≥ 0.98).

‡ Not significantly different from control (P ≥ 0.98).

SEVO = sevoflurane; SPT = 8-sulfophenyl theophylline; DPCPX = 8-cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine; PTX = pertussis toxin; PTIO = 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4′,5,5′-tetramethylimidazole-1-oxyl-3-oxide; l-NAME =N  G-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester; l-NIL = l-N6-(1-iminoethyl)lysine; CHE = chelerythrine; 5HD = 5-hydroxydecanoate; PRZ = prazosin; PRO = propranolol; ADO = adenosine; 8Br-cGMP = 8-bromo-cGMP; SNAP =S -nitroso-N -acetyl-dl-penicillamine.
