Through the new Maternal Health Research Centers of Excellence initiative, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will fund 10 centers of excellence research, a data innovation hub, and an implementation science hub to support research to reduce pregnancy-related complications and deaths and promote maternal health equity.
Within the implementation science hub, ASA member Meghan Lane-Fall will co-lead efforts to bring the research findings of these 10 centers into clinical practice and community settings.
“While there have been great strides and increased focus in advancing our understanding of maternal health, especially in the last few years, without the ability to integrate our knowledge and findings into practice, there is no benefit to patients,” said Dr. Lane-Fall.
The implementation science hub is called AMETHIST@Penn, which stands for Achieving Maternal Equity and Transforming Health through Implementation Science and Training.
Dr. Lane-Fall was the author and coauthor of two ASA Monitor articles in 2021:
- Why Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Matter for Patient Safety, November 2021
- The Present and Future Champions of Patient Safety, October 2021

In a January 2022 Subspecialty News article, Samer Narouze and co-author Angie Stengel informed ASA Monitor readers that the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine had formally changed its name to ASRA Pain Medicine, calling the new name “a refreshed brand story and logo that evokes our attention to the entire pain continuum.” And just this month, Dr. Narouze and Ms. Stengel shared news about ASRA Pain Medicine’s growth over the past year, including being officially seated in the AMA House of Delegates, representation in RVS Update committee meetings, and big increases in abstract submissions to their Annual Pain Meeting.
Dr. Narouze and his ASRA Pain Medicine colleagues have often been sought out by the media over the years, but with the publication of the society’s “ASRA Pain Medicine consensus guidelines on the management of the perioperative patient on cannabis and cannabinoids” earlier this month, Dr. Narouze has been a key contact lately for major media outlets, including:
USA Today: Heavy marijuana use should be disclosed before surgery, new guidelines say
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Cannabis interactions prompt new guidelines from anesthesiologists
UPI: Cannabis screening urged before surgeries requiring anesthesia
Forbes: New guidelines advise disclosing cannabis use before surgery
MedPage Today: Screen all surgery patients for cannabis use, new guidelines say
ASA Monitor authors like Samer Narouze are increasingly appearing in the news, and we’re excited to spotlight these experts and amplify their messages in ASA Monitor Today!
