Given the ongoing and evolving pandemic, an updated joint statement from the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation recommends that in areas of high COVID-19 prevalence, all patients undergoing a nonemergency procedure with the potential to generate aerosols should continue to have preoperative testing for SARS-CoV-2 irrespective of vaccination status, using a nucleic acid amplification test (eg, RT-PCR) and ideally ≤3 days before the procedure [1].
