ASA's Center for Anesthesia Workforce Studies (CAWS) reports trends in anesthesiology resident matches after the release of the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Results and Data report published in May each year. This report summarizes data on candidates who filled residency positions between 2001 and 2020. Resident match data from 1988-2000 is available in the August 2018 and September 2019 ASA Monitor (ASA Monitor 2018;82:42-6; ASA Monitor 2019;83:46-51).
Match results signal a strong demand for anesthesiology residency programs and include growth in the number of applicants and positions offered, increase in the percentage of positions filled, and in the percentage of applicants not matched. In 2020, 4,466 candidates applied to 1,894 anesthesiology positions and filled 99.4% of the available positions. The number of anesthesiology positions offered increased 11% between 2016 and 2020.
