The Ad Hoc Committee on Women in Anesthesia* (AHCWIA) was formed specifically in response to requests from members for leadership development and mentorship resources for women members. It is noteworthy that this was a grassroots member-driven initiative. The committee was initially appointed in mid-2016 by then ASA President Daniel Cole, M.D., FASA. Since the committee’s initial formation, it has been re-appointed by the ASA President in the 2017, 2018 and 2019 governance years.
Educational: At ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2016 the committee sponsored a well- received and attended panel of women physician leaders discussing their varying paths into leadership in organized medicine. That this panel even occurred was remarkable given that the committee had only been appointed several months prior to the annual meeting.
