In 1993, ASA published its first report on National Resident Match Program (NRMP) data in the ASA NEWSLETTER.1  Alan W. Grogono, M.D., authored the annual article on anesthesiology residency trends until 2006. The Committee on Physician Resources continued the reporting from 2008 to 2010. This current report summarizes data on candidates who filled residency positions between 1988 and 2018. ASA’s Center for Anesthesia Workforce Studies (CAWS) will continue to report the anesthesiology resident match results based on the NRMP Results and Data report published in May each year.

In 2018, there were 37,103 applicants across all specialties who competed for 33,167 residency positions (includes first-year, second-year and Physician R), with an overall position fill rate of 96.2 percent. In anesthesiology, 3,914 candidates applied to 1,855 offered positions and filled 97.2 percent of those positions in 2018.
