The ASA Committee on Research is a group of highly successful scientists and physician-scientists with extensive experience in conducting research, managing laboratories, training investigators and peer review of research. Members have national and international reputations in research. In addition, they have considerable experience in proposing and obtaining research funding, and administratively navigating through various foundations and national funding agencies that support research. Most committee members have or have had research programs supported by competitive peer-reviewed grants funded by federal agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health, Veterans Affairs Merit Review Award Program and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Of particular importance is that committee members also have substantial expertise in the evaluation of research proposals gained via service on research grant evaluation panels (“study sections”) for these same agencies.
