The following is a report from stakeholders who participated in a Doctors Back to School™ event hosted by ASA at ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2016 in Chicago last October.
The health care pipeline represents a process of experiences from initial exposure to the health care professions to the attainment of the necessary requirements to become a health care professional. For students without immediate contacts in the medical fields, pipeline exposure often begins with a strong primary educational experience, including the introduction of role models, allowing students to see the possibilities of a career in health care. Minorities are underrepresented in medicine.1 In 2002, the American Medical Association (AMA) began the Doctors Back to SchoolTM program to encourage minority students to enter the health care pipeline through conversations with these children in the classroom setting.
