We come from widely disparate backgrounds. Each of us has a different origin to our call to become a physician. In reaching that goal, we travel different roads to gaining our education and training. Still, there are many similarities. Certainly in the United States, our training must meet standards acceptable to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. And the American Board of Anesthesiology has certain expectations that must be filled by the training program and by the individual physician anesthesiologist before we can become a board-certified practitioner. And each of us – as we stand on that cusp of inducing general anesthesia or injecting local anesthesia for a regional block – is focused solely on providing that patient with the safest anesthetic care possible.
