Summertime is an active season for ASA physicians and staff who review and respond to regulatory proposals. The ASA Department of Quality and Regulatory Affairs works with physician committees and leadership to ensure our member priorities are heard among federal regulators.

Each year, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) releases its Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) proposed rule that sets forth yearly policy on Medicare Part A and hospital-level initiatives. This year, CMS included a broad range of proposals and requests for information (RFIs) on issues directly affecting ASA members, from the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) to maternal health quality measures to climate change. In a letter to CMS, ASA took the opportunity to advocate strongly for physician-led anesthesia care while sharing the anesthesiologist's perspective in key issues in patient care and departmental administration.
