ASA has been a leading contributor to public health and safety for decades. The formation of the Committee on Trauma and Emergency Preparedness (COTEP) is an illustrative example of that; COTEP was formed as a response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks over 20 years ago. ASA sought to harness the vast expertise and skill that exists within and around trauma, acute care, and emergency/disaster preparedness to benefit the greater membership, medical community, and the public.

ASA's COTEP has been very successful in attracting many experts in the fields of trauma, acute care, and emergency preparedness. COTEP has fostered dialogue, creation, and collaboration on many related and relevant topics across the nation. Consequently, not only have a myriad of projects had their origins within COTEP, but the fields of trauma and emergency preparedness have also been advanced through science, advocacy, and education.
