In late January 2021, it was announced that more than 1,100 ASA members had been designated as Fellows of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Launched in 2017, the FASA designation is the society's highest acknowledgment that recognizes years of dedication to exceptional education, leadership, and commitment to the specialty.

Gary Schwartz, MD, FASA, is a private practice interventional pain physician and regional anesthesiologist, as well as Chair of the FASA subcommittee. He sought involvement with ASA several years ago and applied to be a part of the Committee on Membership, which oversees the FASA program and its eligibility criteria.

Dr. Schwartz stressed that the FASA is a privileged fellowship designation for those who demonstrate leadership, advocacy, education, and dedication to the specialty of anesthesiology.
