The patient didn't know about the ASA's Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) model or Jamaica Hospital Medical Center's yearslong commitment to it; but he did know that his PSH team was there to support him during a particularly trying time.

“He had extreme anxiety over his impending surgery and recovery,” said Stephanie Smith, RN, BSN, Director of Care Management at not-for-profit Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, Jamaica, N.Y., part of the Medisys Health Network. “One of our community care assistants was in touch with him throughout the experience, and they developed a strong therapeutic relationship. She knew when his anxiety was escalating, and he calmed down because he knew that he could pick up the phone at any time and discuss whatever questions he had.”
