It is an October Monday morning in San Francisco 1967. A 13-year-old young man wakes up early and gets ready to head off to school. He attends Portola Junior High school, a predominately black and Hispanic school in San Francisco. It is a long walk to school carrying his books and his saxophone. He gets to the school playground at around 8 a.m. and sides are chosen up for three-on-three basketball before the bell rings for homeroom. After homeroom, his classes are: first period, social studies; second period, English; third period, band (where he plays the saxophone); then fourth period, lunch. During lunchtime, he participates in intramural league games on the school playground. Then comes fifth period science, sixth period algebra and seventh period physical education. After school, he has basketball practice before heading home. This young man’s mother is a school teacher. His mother demands that he do well...
