James D. Grant, M.D., M.B.A., FASA, 2018 ASA President, called to order the opening session of the 71st meeting of the ASA House of Delegates (HOD) at the Moscone Center in San Francisco at 8:03 a.m. on Sunday, October 14, 2018. There were 375 properly credentialed delegates seated, easily comprising a necessary quorum.
The proceedings of the HOD were prefaced by inspirational words of invocation, this year provided by Bruce Feldstein, M.D., founder and director of the Jewish Chaplaincy at Stanford Medicine, Adjunct Clinical Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine and member of the Stanford Medicine Physician Wellness Committee. ASA member Sarah J. Pae, M.D., sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.” During his opening remarks, Dr. Grant recognized the many honored guests present, representing anesthesiology and medical societies from across the world.
