The World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) congratulates Dr. Jannicke Mellin-Olsen on becoming the new President of the WFSA, taking over from Dr. Gonzalo Barreiro, who completed his two-year term at the end of August 2018.
While Dr. Barreiro hailed from Uruguay, Dr. Mellin-Olsen is Norwegian and has served as a former Secretary to the European Society of Anesthesiology. As the President of the European Board of Anesthesiology, she led the process of developing the Helsinki Declaration of Patient’s Safety in Anaesthesiology.
She stated recently, “Being the president of an organization like the WFSA is a big honor, but also a big responsibility. In a world where five out of seven billion people do not have access to safe, timely and affordable anesthesia and surgery, anesthesiologists cannot expect anyone other but ourselves to lead the way.
