Two physician anesthesiologists were appointed to their state medical boards this January. On January 3, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder (R) appointed Michael Chafty, M.D., J.D., to the Michigan Board of Medicine. On January 13, Texas Governor Greg Abbot (R) appointed Sherif Zaafran, M.D., to the Texas Medical Board and named him board president.

Dr. Chafty has served on the board of directors of the Michigan Society of Anesthesiologists as well as on the board of directors of the Michigan State Medical Society. Additionally, he is active within the American Medical Association (AMA) where, as a resident, he served on the Council on Legislation. Dr. Chafty is currently an AMA delegate and recently chaired the reference committee on legislation during the June 2016 annual meeting.
