As the holiday season approaches, for many of us, our thoughts turn to charity and helping others. This is a laudable and predictable scenario, given the generally high level of altruism and compassion inherent in physicians and other health care workers. But sometimes, giving to others is not enough. Have you ever thought about being charitable to yourself and to your profession? I promise you that ASA is doing a multitude of good things for anesthesiologists, our patients and our specialty. Not only is your society taking a leading role in today’s issues, including surprise billing, MACRA and scope of practice, but ASA is forging forward with new and important initiatives, including the Brain Health Initiative, our Anesthesia SimSTAT educational product and the creation of a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (FASA).
