The ASA Committee on Practice Management held its inaugural leadership conference “Building Effective Leaders” on January 23, 2015, as a new preconference to the annual PRACTICE MANAGEMENT meeting held in Atlanta. The impetus for this new preconference was the result of an increase on the part of ASA members in becoming more effective and participatory leaders within their departments, groups and health systems. A common thread throughout the day was a discussion about some of the critical knowledge and skills needed to develop the capability to assume an expanded role in the health care system. While a one-day session is not enough time to teach leadership skills and allow one to develop the necessary tools to be successful as a leader, it can provide the foundation upon which to assume this new role.
