The United States military routinely sends medical personnel to our neighbors in the Caribbean and Central America. It is a deeply satisfying experience providing care in underserved areas, while enabling us to practice our profession far from the comforts of our modern operating rooms. As anesthesiologists, it is in our nature to adapt to our surroundings while at the same time providing a safe and effective anesthetic. We’re also effective at quickly establishing patient rapport and strengthening a patient’s confidence that they will be guided safely through the perioperative period. In spring 2015, two military surgical teams embarked on separate trips to Honduras and the Dominican Republic with the goal of providing a safe anesthetic no matter the environment and creating lasting bonds with our patients and professional colleagues.
