The mission of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA) is to advance the science and practice of regional anesthesia and pain medicine. The society’s educational and research heritage dates back to 1923 when the society was founded by French surgeon Gaston Labat, who was recruited by the Mayo brothers to teach the relatively new techniques of regional anesthesia in Rochester, and later in New York City. In 1938, ASRA was one of the four sponsoring organizations at the formation of the American Board of Anesthesiology, but just two years later would disband and encourage its members to join the American Society of Anesthetists, the predecessor of ASA (1945). Reincarnated in 1975, ASRA will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year.
