“Meaningful use” has led to a rapid increase in electronic health record (EHR) and anesthesia information management system (AIMS) adoption rates. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, more than 80 percent of hospitals currently use an EHR, double the penetration from just 2012.1 AIMS adoption has exploded as well, increasing more than 400 percent from 2007-10.2 As we near a tipping point in adoption, most academic centers have either adopted an AIMS or are under contract to do so. In addition, more than 20 percent of private practices have also implemented these systems. There are some who even suggest an AIMS should be considered a standard of care.3 While we have not yet reached that point, there can be no doubt AIMS are here to stay.
