ANESTHESIOLOGY, the official journal of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the leading journal in the specialty, is seeking a Statistical Editor to join our expanding team of Statistical Editors.
Our Statistical Editors lead and implement our statistical and methodological peer review process. In collaboration with the Editor in Chief, the Editorial Board, and other Statistical Editors, they help devise and maintain the rigorous scientific standards and processes for the Journal.
The Statistical Editor will conduct specialty peer review for submitted manuscripts and provide authors with expertly informed criticism, advice, and feedback on submitted manuscripts. Through peer review, the Editor will ensure adherence to methodological and statistical standards set forth by the Journal.
The Statistical Editor serves as an ambassador of Anesthesiology and facilitates in the solicitation of articles and Journal-sponsored presentations, while representing the Journal at scientific societies and within the publishing community. Our Statistical Editors also serve as a knowledge broker to the Editorial Board, to ensure that Board members are well-versed in the latest statistical methods and standards.
Statistical Editors report to the Editor in Chief, who is ultimately responsible for our peer review process. The Statistical Editor will contribute peer reviews on a combination of new and revised manuscripts.
Duties and Responsibilities
Evaluate the statistical and methodological content of submitted manuscripts in a critical and independent manner
Provide a recommendation and rationale to reject, accept, or revise manuscripts, based on the level of scientific quality in context with the reviews of the content experts
Maintain high ethical standards in the review process while respecting confidentiality and adhering to accepted publication ethics
Represent the Journal at scientific conferences, give presentations, and organize conference sessions
Ensure adherence to Journal standards for style, reporting guidelines, and technical accuracy, by communicating with authors, other editors, and the Editor-in-Chief
Requirements
Advanced degree (a Ph.D. or equivalent is preferred) in mathematical statistics, applied statistics, applied methodology, or equivalent
Broad knowledge of statistical and epidemiological methods and research design
Five years of working experience as a biostatistician, applied statistician, research methodologist, or quantitative scientist
Able to identify best practices of research reporting and conduct using international standards (e.g., EQUATOR Network)
Working knowledge of research and research methods in anesthesia (perioperative, critical care, and pain medicine); familiarity of medical outcomes and classification systems
Previous experience as a peer reviewer or editor for a medical journal
Able to effectively communicate in a collegial and professional manner with authors and the editorial team in written reviews, emails, and phone calls; proficiency in English
Compensation
The Journal provides a designated stipend or salary support equivalent to approximately 25-50% professional effort.
