The 2020 Anesthesiology Journal Symposium titled “Hemodynamics 2020” addresses cardiovascular monitoring and management considerations in a perioperative setting. It will feature the following moderator and speakers.

Jerrold H. Levy, M.D.

Daniel I. Sessler, M.D.

The symposium will feature plenary lectures by invited experts who will address current concepts and current research in the field on topics, including:

  1. What are our hemodynamic goals and supporting data?

  2. What have we learned from perioperative clinical trials?

  3. What cardiovascular monitoring should I use?

The modus operandi for anesthesiologists is to maintain hemodynamic stability. However, what this means clinically is far more complex as perioperative therapeutic goals of cardiovascular management, the complexity of patients, and growing knowledge, research, and monitoring techniques continue to evolve in our clinical practice. The concept of hemodynamic management includes preoperative evaluation, intraoperative, and postoperative management into the intensive care unit. The ongoing clinical applications of invasive and noninvasive measurement technologies that range from ultrasound and echocardiography to noninvasive cardiac output and hemodynamic monitoring continue to evolve. Our clinical management based on therapeutic approaches to physiologic and pharmacologic manipulation continues to evolve, especially regarding blood pressure management, and understanding the end-organ effects in the brain, heart, vasculature, kidneys, gut, and other organs. Hemodynamic management also depends on the type of surgery (e.g., cardiac, orthopedic, neurologic), specific procedural aspects (e.g., cardiopulmonary bypass, laparoscopic) and critical aspects of short, intermediate, and long-term effects and outcomes.

Lectures will be followed by oral presentations of 12 abstracts that were selected for their relevance to the symposium topic.

We invite research abstracts on this topic from all related fields: basic science, translational, clinical, quality improvement, and education research. The top 8 to 12 abstracts will be presented orally during the second half of the symposium.

All abstracts submissions must meet deadline and guidelines set by the American Society of Anesthesiology (https://www.asahq.org/annualmeeting/education/submissions). The authors of abstracts selected will be offered an opportunity to submit their full manuscripts to Anesthesiology for inclusion in an issue to be published in the spring of 2021.

The Journal is inviting full-length article submissions related to the topic. Articles must meet Journal submission guidelines. Article submission deadline is August 1, 2020. Journal submission guidelines can be found at http://anesthesiology.pubs.asahq.org/InstructionsforAuthors.aspx.
