With advances in medical care, patients are living longer and are presenting for surgery at later ages and with more co-morbidities. Anesthesiologists are facing the challenge of guiding increasingly elderly patients through surgery to the desired end-points of enhanced recovery and optimal quality of life.

The 2019 Anesthesiology Journal Symposium will feature plenary lectures by invited experts who will address current concepts and current research in the field to provide a better understanding of:

  • How to identify older patients at risk for adverse perioperative outcomes

  • Strategies to be used for preoperative optimization of the elderly

  • Best practices for perioperative management of older surgical patients

  • When should frailty result in a change in surgical approach or anesthetic plan?

  • Leading ways to prevent postoperative delirium

  • Treatment of postoperative delirium

In addition to the plenary lectures, eight research abstracts will be presented orally during the second half of the symposium.

We invite research abstracts on this topic from all related fields: basic science, translational, clinical, quality improvement, and education research. The top eight abstracts will be presented orally during the second half of the symposium.

All abstract submissions must meet deadlines and guidelines set by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (https://www.asahq.org/annualmeeting/education/submissions). The authors of abstracts selected for the symposium will be offered an opportunity to submit their full manuscripts to Anesthesiology for inclusion in an issue to be published in the spring of 2020.

The Journal is inviting full-length article submissions related to the topic. Articles must meet Journal submission guidelines.

Article submission deadline is August 1, 2019. Journal submission guidelines can be found at http://anesthesiology.pubs.asahq.org/public/InstructionsforAuthors.aspx.
